Clinical Experience
The sole reason to integrate the North Shore University Hospital and the Long Island Jewish Medical Center general surgery residency programs was to enhance the educational opportunities and the clinical experience in the primary and secondary components of surgery of our residents. Residents rotate at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Nassau County Medical Center, Staten Island University Hospital, and Westchester County Medical Center.
Located approximately 15 miles east of New York City on Long Island,The Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park is an 829-bed hospital and the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset has 731 beds. Together, they serve the greater metropolitan New York area, including Queens and Long Island. Approximately 25,000 procedures are done each year at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and approximately 27,000 at North Shore University Hospital. Long Island Jewish Medical Center has been designated as The Long Island Campus for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine as part of an affiliation agreement with the Medical School. An institutional academic affiliation exists between North Shore University Hospital and New York University School of Medicine as well.
The combination of these institutions provides a breadth of exposure to all areas of general surgery, surgical subspecialties, and surgical critical care that is difficult to match. The faculty members at each one of these institutions are excellent clinical and academic surgeons, inspiring teachers and productive researchers.
