Clostridium Difficile

Clostridium difficile (C. difficile ) is a type of bacteria that can cause lower belly (abdominal) discomfort, bloating, and loose stools. The bacteria grows in the large bowel, also called the colon, and produces a substance that can cause diarrhea. C. difficile is a spore that can be found in the environment. These spores may be on toilet seats or places unwashed hands have touched, such as door knobs. The NSLIJ Health System realizes the impact on patients and is committed to decreasing the occurrence of this infection.
