Cochlear Implant 101

June 8, 2009

Students of the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf observe, with the assistance of interpretive services, as their classmate Mariya Yousef prepares for a cochlear implant mapping session with Barbara Popecki, senior audiologist at the North Shore-LIJ’s Apelian Cochlear Implant Center in New Hyde Park, NY. The session, also attended by the patient’s mother and school speech therapist, gave students information to help them better understand how cochlear implants restore hearing to profoundly deaf patients. Cochlear implants are surgically placed within the inner ear, directly stimulating the ending of the auditory nerve.
