Cohen Children's Medical Center Among Nations Best
NEW HYDE PARK – For the fourth consecutive year, US News & World Report magazine has ranked the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York as being among the nation’s best.
The US News & World Report’s “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” edition, available on news stands on July 27 and accessible online now at www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals, ranks the Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) among the nation’s top 30 children’s hospitals in the pediatric specialties of: urology and diabetes/endocrinology . CCMC was one of only two hospitals in New York State recognized for its expertise in those specialties.
The rankings are based on hospitals’ reputation, medical outcomes such as death and infection rates, and care-related indicators such as patient volume, nurse staffing and availability of specialized programs.
“For patients and their families, the US News & World Report rankings reaffirm the Cohen Children’s Medical Center’s growing reputation as a destination hospital for children from throughout the New York metropolitan area, the nation and the world,” said Arthur Klein MD, the hospital’s executive director and chief of staff, and the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s senior vice president of children’s services. “We are proud of this national distinction, and feel confident that the generosity entrusted to us by Steven and Alexandra Cohen will enable us to build on the hospital’s legacy of extraordinary pediatric care.”
To meet the growing demand for pediatric services, CCMC is in the midst of a $120 million expansion project, made possible by the Cohen Foundation’s $50 million gift earlier this year. This spring, construction began on a four-story, 100,000-square-foot pavilion in front of the existing children’s hospital in New Hyde Park. The new building, expected to be completed in 2013, will feature a:
Pediatric Emergency Center – the region’s first dedicated, stand-alone pediatric emergency department;
- 24-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit;
- 25-bed Medical-Surgical Unit; and
- State-of-the-art surgery center that will include six operating rooms solely dedicated to children.
