NEW HYDE PARK, NY – The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York today announced the appointment of Steven Stylianos, MD, as chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and associate surgeon-in-chief.

Prior to his appointment at CCMC, Dr. Stylianos served as chief of pediatric surgery at Miami Children’s Hospital. He also served as medical director of the hospital’s operating room and medical director of its regional pediatric trauma program.

A graduate of Rutgers University and the New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Stylianos completed his general surgical training at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. He subsequently spent two years as the Trauma Fellow at the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute in Boston. He then completed the prestigious pediatric surgical fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Afterwards, Dr. Stylianos joined the faculty of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Children’s Hospital of New York in 1992. It was there that he organized and directed the 50-member team of physicians and nurses that separated conjoined twins in 1993, 1995 and 2000. These complex surgeries attracted the attention of national media, including NBC-TV’s “Dateline” and CBS-TV’s “48 Hours.”

Throughout his career, Dr. Stylianos has served as chairman of the Trauma Committee for the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) and authored an APSA position paper supporting all measures to reduce the toll of firearm violence in children. He also served as the co-principal investigator of the US Department of Health, Maternal and Child Health Bureau’s Partnership for Development and Dissemination of Outcomes for Injured Children.
