NEW HYDE PARK, NY – The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York today announced the appointment of Steven Shelov, MD, MS, as associate chief of staff. A well-known advocate in the area of child health policy and education, Dr. Shelov has been an educator, clinician and professor for the past 35 years.

In his new position, Dr. Shelov is working closely with Arthur Klein, MD, senior vice president of children’s services at the North Shore-LIJ Health System, and executive director and chief of staff of the 152-bed hospital. Dr. Shelov is focusing his educational expertise on enhancing post-graduate residency education. He will also serve as a mentor and master teacher at the new School of Medicine that North Shore-LIJ is developing with Hofstra University.

“Dr. Shelov is a distinguished pediatrician, professor, healthcare policy and education expert and administrator whose leadership will be invaluable as we enter a new, exciting era at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York,” said Dr. Klein.

Dr. Shelov previously served as vice president of the Maimonides Infants and Children’s Hospital of Brooklyn, chairman of pediatrics for Maimonides Medical Center, chairman and senior vice president of pediatrics at Lutheran Medical Center and professor of pediatrics at SUNY/Downstate Medical Center. During his tenure at Maimonides and Lutheran, Dr. Shelov developed the three-hospital children’s hospital system of Maimonides, Lutheran and Coney Island Hospital.

He has been active in health policy, serving several presidential administrations, and is currently working with the State of New York government leaders to address child healthcare quality issues. The author of more than 100 articles and 15 books, Dr. Shelov is editor-in-chief of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Caring for Your Baby and Young Child---Birth to Five, recently published in its fifth edition, Your Baby’s First Year, in its 3rd edition, and co-editor of Pediatrics for Medical Students. A Yale University graduate, Dr. Shelov completed his medical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin and received his Master’s of Administrative Medicine from the University of Wisconsin.

“It is a pleasure to join Dr. Klein’s team at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York,” Dr. Shelov said, citing its ranking in US News & World Report as one of the nation’s top 30 children’s hospitals for diabetes and endocrinology disorders, and urology. “I look forward to facilitating continued integration of care for children from the hospital bedside to the doctor’s office and to enhancing its graduate medical education program.”
