North Shore-LIJ Appoints David Chan, MD, as Vice Chairman of Urology, Opens New Office in Flushing

 FLUSHING, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Arthur Smith Institute for Urology today announced that David Y. Chan, MD, has been recruited from Johns Hopkins Hospital to become the health system’s vice chairman of urology. 

Dr. Chan’s primary office will be located at a new location the Smith Institute has opened at Queens Crossing, 136-20 38th Avenue, Flushing. He also consults with patients at North Shore-LIJ’s Specialty Medical Center at Forest Hills and at the Smith’s Institute’s main office in the Center for Advanced Medicine, 450 Lakeville Road, Lake Success.

Prior to joining North Shore-LIJ, Dr. Chan served as director of outpatient urology at the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD His specialty is minimally invasive therapies for the treatment of benign and malignant urinary diseases., including prostate, bladder and kidney cancers, prostate enlargement and kidney stones. His research efforts have focused on the use of so-called “ablative energies” to treat urinary diseases, such as high intensity-focused ultrasound, radiofrequency and cryoablation. He has published numerous articles in the Journal of Urology and Urology, as well as book chapters in leading urology textbooks. At Johns Hopkins, he trained residents and urologists in the latest surgical techniques and innovative technologies, such as Greenlight laser therapy.

Dr. Chan received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School after graduating summa cum laude from Yale University. He completed his urological training at Johns Hopkins’ Brady Urological Institute.
