David J. Langer, MD Appointed Director of Cerebrovascular Research

MANHASSET, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System today announced the appointment of David J. Langer, MD, as director of cerebrovascular research at the Cushing Neuroscience Institutes and associate professor of neurosurgery for the Hofstra University/North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He joins a distinguished staff of physicians, researchers and faculty who contribute nationally recognized expertise to neurosurgical technologies and treatments.

“Dr. Langer is a national leader in cerebrovascular surgery and research,” said Raj K. Narayan, MD, chairman of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center, senior vice president of neurosurgery for the North Shore-LIJ Health System, and director of the Cushing Neuroscience Institutes. “His ongoing neurovascular surgery research, as well as his skills and experience in new technologies like laser-assisted cerebral bypass surgery, will significantly enhance treatment options for our patients.”

Dr. Langer earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed his neurosurgical training. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Langer served as a neurovascular fellow at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan and its Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Dr. Langer was a visiting attending at Academisch Zeikenhuis Utrecht in the Netherlands, where he studied laser-assisted cerebral bypass surgery before bringing the technique to the United States. He has also recently completed a neuro-interventional fellowship at the State University of New York at Buffalo, one of only three open vascular neurosurgeons to have done so mid-career.

His clinical interests in neurosurgery include: arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms, carotidartery disease, complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, acoustic neuromas, benign brain tumor surgery, brain revascularization and medical informatics. The author of numerous papers and book chapters, Dr. Langer lectures both nationally and internationally on these and other topics in the field of neurosurgery.

He has served in an advisory role for of a number of companies including Vassol, Mizuho, Leica and Apple. Dr. Langer is a member of the Cerebrovascular Section of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Established in 2006, North Shore-LIJ’s Cushing Neuroscience Institutes encompass 16 institutes, centers and programs focusing on a range of neurological disorders, including brain tumors, Chiari malformations, movement disorders, brain aneurysms, epilepsy, head and back pain, and stroke.
