David Schwartz, MD
Dr. Schwartz is board certified in Radiation Oncology and specializes in the treatment of head and neck cancers and general radiation oncology. He comes to the health system from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where he served over the last five years as Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Experimental Diagnostic Imaging. Prior to that, Dr. Schwartz was Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at University of Washington in Seattle.
Dr. Schwartz will lead efforts to enhance the research and education agenda within the department, the Feinstein Institute and Hofstra Medical School. Dr. Schwartz will serve as a key member of the head and neck clinical and research team within the NSLIJ Cancer Institute, and will hold a duel appointment in the Department of Otolaryngology. In addition to head and neck cancer treatment, he will build our clinical services for lung cancer, prostate cancer, and stereotactic radiosurgery.
Dr. Schwartz holds professional memberships in over a dozen medical societies including the American Society for Radiation Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association of Cancer Research, and American Head and Neck Society, has written over fifty articles, editorials and book chapters, and is nationally recognized for his work in head and neck cancer and advanced imaging techniques for radiation treatment. He has been supported by the National Cancer Institute, VA MERIT, RTOG, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and by industry to lead clinical cancer treatment, imaging biomarker, and quality of life trials, as well as preclinical laboratory work to study molecularly targeted radiosensitization of gastrointestinal and head and neck cancers. He has led first-of-kind prospective trials to study fully individualized "adaptive" radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, as well as FDG-PET cancer imaging in the phase II and III settings.
Dr. Schwartz received his medical degree from the Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences from Stanford University, California and is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology.
