Deciding About Having CVS

If you are considering CVS, you need to contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Not all doctors are certified to perform CVS, and you will be referred to a physician who has expertise in doing this procedure. Since the procedure is usually done between the 10th and 12th week of pregnancy, the timing is critical. You will meet with a genetic counselor prior to the procedure, so they can review your family history, discuss the CVS procedure and arrange the appropriate testing. This is an important decision and should be discussed by you and your partner.

Understanding the risks, benefits and limitations of the CVS (or amniocentesis) procedure can help you make an informed decision regarding options for prenatal diagnosis.
