Dennis Dowling
Regional Executive Director
Physician and Ambulatory Network Services (PAANS)
North Shore-LIJ Health System
Dennis Dowling is seasoned healthcare executive with over 30 years of experience in a variety of leadership roles in healthcare administration. He is currently the Regional Executive Director for the Physician and Ambulatory Network Services (PAANS) at the North Shore-LIJ Health System. In this role, Mr. Dowling is responsible and accountable for the quality of patient care services, patient satisfaction, operational and financial performance and compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies of all physician practices and ambulatory businesses within the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
Mr. Dowling began in the healthcare field as a hospital worker at Nassau County Medical Center in the early 1970's. He joined North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in 1974 as an Assistant Hospital Administrator and was promoted to Administrator of Planning and Development in 1987. In 1995, he was promoted to Executive Director of NSUH and in April 2003 Mr. Dowling assumed executive director responsibility for Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC) as well. In this expanded role, Mr. Dowling used his management skills to integrate best practices throughout both hospitals, to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
Under Mr. Dowling’s leadership NSUH was named the nation’s top hospital in a survey compiled by Consumer Checkbook and published in Modern Maturity magazine. In 2001 and 2002, the Solucient Leadership Institute recognized the hospital as one of the top 100 hospitals in Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success. In 2003, Solucient ranked NSUH as one of the nation’s top 25 major teaching hospitals in a survey published in Modern Healthcare magazine. In another prestigious honor, LIJMC and NSUH were the first two hospitals in New York State to receive the Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing Service. This prestigious award from the American Nurses Credentialing Center has been presented to less than 75 hospitals nationwide.
In May 2007, Mr. Dowling was promoted to his current role as the Regional Executive Director overseeing the Physician and Ambulatory Network Services. Under his leadership, PAANS has grown from a traditional faculty practice model to a more comprehensive entity that not only includes the faculty but all ambulatory operations and service lines within the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Under Mr. Dowling’s leadership, PAANS has witnessed an exponential growth—more than doubled the size of the faculty and total revenues and also seen an improvement in operating margin, quality indicators and patient satisfaction scores.
Mr. Dowling has held several leadership roles in the community including but not limited to Chairman of the Planning Committee of the Greater New York Hospital Association and Chairman of the Nassau Suffolk Hospital Council. He is also the past President of the Nassau Suffolk Health Care Association.
Mr. Dowling has a B.S. from University of Pennsylvania and he received his M.S. in Health Services Administration, from SUNY at Stony Brook.
