Dental Medicine Elective at LIJMC

Course Director: William Stewart, DDS, Chief of Dentistry


The goal of this elective is to give the participant understanding and practical experience in hospital dentistry. The student will be integrated into a general practice Resident curriculum, receiving instruction in hospital protocols and patient management. The student will become familiar with the special needs of the medically compromised, psychologically impaired and developmentally disabled patient.

The participant will have the opportunity to perform/observe a variety of dental procedures in the out-patient, Emergency Room and Operating Room environment.

The student will attend seminars and conferences and have Emergency Room assignments. At the completion of the elective, the student will provide a report of his observations and experiences in the hospital in the form of a daily log.
