Message from the Director

The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island has a proud history of serving communities throughout Long Island and the entire New York City metropolitan area since 1986. Its mission has been simple – to combat corneal blindness by providing the safest and highest quality ocular tissue for transplantation. Since its inception, the Lions Eye Bank has provided over 10,500 corneas for sight restoring or sight preserving transplants. Corneas for transplantation have been sent throughout the United States and indeed throughout the entire world.

For all of our successes, however, our program depends on the kindness and generosity of those individuals and families who choose to donate the Gift of Sight. There is no substitute for a human cornea. I urge you to take a moment to consider how you can completely transform someone’s life by donating the precious Gift of Sight. Join our crusade against corneal blindness by signing up in the New York State Donate Life Registry today.

I would be remiss if I didn’t additionally mention and acknowledge the support of all of the team members who also help make vision a reality for so many. Whether it be the coordinators who talk to the grieving families, the technicians who recover the tissue, the outreach staff who help educate the public, the support staff who answer the phones and pay our bills, the scores of Lions members who support the Eye Bank both as volunteers and as financial contributors, or the medical leadership, transplant surgeons, hospitals and entire Lions Clubs that help make this all happen, our success depends on so many. On behalf of all of our corneal transplant recipients, thank you all for making such a difference.
