Transitions @ LIJ occupies approximately 13,000 sq. feet of space in the Manhasset Ambulatory Care Pavilion of the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, on Northern Blvd. in Manhasset, N.Y. The layout of the facility is designed to facilitate ease of transport of clients between therapy sessions, and maximize clients? independence. Occupational and physical therapy spaces are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and designed with an emphasis on functional skills training. A working kitchen and dining area allows clients to practice home, community and work-related skills.
Within walking distance of the facility are a Barnes & Noble bookstore and cafe, haircutting/nail salon, several restaurants, department stores and bank. A short drive from the facility (accessible by facility van) are local parks, places of worship, grocery stores, and LIRR train station. These local establishments provide an integral component to the therapeutic milieu, enabling clients to participate regularly in community re-entry training and leisure-recreational activities.
Transitions maintains an excellent relationship with the local community. Our clients have, at various times, done poetry readings at Barnes & Noble, spoken to high school students about the dangers of drinking and driving, and volunteered or fundraised for local community organizations. Staff are available to provide inservices/seminars at local hospitals, professional organizations, etc.
