Urology at Forest Hills

The Urology Division of the Department of Surgery offers state-of-the-art treatment for both men and women. We offer treatments for diseases of the kidneys, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs.

Kidney Stones

Treatment and management involves everything from relief of symptoms, to removal of stones, to full metabolic evaluations to reduce the chance of recurrence. Forest Hills Hospital offers laser treatment, as well as ESWL (shock wave lithotripsy) for the fragmentation of stones. The majority of these procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.

Cancer

We provide expert diagnosis and treatment of all urologic cancers, including kidney, prostate, bladder and testes. For prostate cancer, nerve-sparing surgery performed at our institution has improved potency  following surgery. In combination with our Division of Radiation Oncology, brachytherapy (radioactive seed implantation) can be performed for prostate cancer as well.

Voiding Dysfunction

Bladder problems can afflict both men and women. In men, this is generally due to enlargement of the prostate that occurs in normal aging. As the prostate enlarges, the chance of urinary problems generally increases. We offer the full gamut of treatment options, from medical therapy to minimally invasive therapy with laser/radiofrequency/microwave to open surgical procedures. Women with incontinence (leakage of urine) need to be properly diagnosed. For the proper classification of their problem, we can offer urodynamic testing. After the diagnosis is made, treatment ranges from medication to behavioral therapy/biofeedback to minimally invasive surgical procedures such as slings or transvaginal tape. In combination with our Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to women with pelvic prolapse and urinary incontinence.

Infertility/Impotency

Fifty percent of all couples experiencing infertility have a male factor involved. The number one problem encountered is variocele (enlarged veins in the testes). Fortunately, microsurgical correction of this problem offers a high chance of improved sperm quality and pregnancy rates. We have a great deal of experience with the microsurgical approach.

For men experiencing erectile dysfunction, we offer compassionate care in a discreet environment. Treatment options generally include a pill, pellet or injection. In addition, penile implantation prosthesis is performed, which offers the highest patient and partner satisfaction rates in patients dissatisfied with medical therapy.
