Rehabilitation at Franklin

The Franklin Hospital Rehabilitation Department treats in-hospital patients with a large variety of problems. We specialize in orthopedic surgery, including total hip and knee replacements, internal fixations and spinal surgery. We also treat all patients who have had strokes, amputations, cardiac conditions, pulmonary problems or for any reason have functional impairments/difficulties and will benefit from physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy.

The therapist, along with the patient's input, designs a treatment program and sets goals specific to the individual. Working closely with social workers, care coordinators and physicians, we discharge patients as appropriate to their needs.

Most patients are seen by a physical therapist within 24 hours of a physician referral. Our physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapist and speech language pathologist are all licensed, experienced and professional.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is designed to restore function lost due to injury or disease, expand a patient's movement potential and to help prevent complications resulting from disability or pain. In all cases, movement is promoted through physical means. Following a thorough evaluation, which gathers information about the patient's abilities and disabilities, a treatment program is designed to meet the patient's needs. Different treatment approaches along with patient education help to achieve our goals.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists evaluate and treat dysfunction in order to maximize the patient's performance in "activities of daily living."

Speech Language Pathology

Speech language pathologists evaluate and treat disorders of speech, language, swallowing, voice and cognitive communication.

Outpatient Procedures

Many patients who have outpatient procedures or ambulatory surgery are also seen by a physical therapist prior to discharge for gait training and stair negotiation training with an appropriate assistive device.

Joint Replacement Program

The joint replacement program works in coordination with the Rehabilitation Department to assess the needs of patients that are undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery. Pre-operative education classes are offered in the hospital that include a tour of the orthopedic unit. On the first day after surgery you will begin physical therapy for exercise, transfers and walking. This is done to help speed your recovery and determine an appropriate discharge plan for you.

Student Training

Franklin Hospital has contracts with various colleges and universities so students can do their clinical affiliations and learn from qualified professionals in the areas of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology.
