Garden City and Manhasset Communities Support Pediatric Healthcare
LAKE SUCCESS, NY—Two compassionate Long Island families have joined forces to support pediatric healthcare in the New York metropolitan area. On April 15, 2010, Lisa and Tim Goettelmann of Garden City and Kristen and Dan Denihan of Manhasset jointly hosted a reception to raise funds and awareness for the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York (CCMC). In total, the event raised $100,000 for CCMC, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
The reception, held at Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success, was attended by 150 parents of young children within the close-knit Garden City and Manhasset communities. Over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, attendees learned more about CCMC from the Goettelmann and Denihan families as well as from Kevin Dwyer, senior vice president and chief development officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System Foundation. All have personal experience with the hospital and are grateful for the outstanding care their children received. Arthur Klein, MD, senior vice president of children’s services for North Shore-LIJ and executive director of CCMC, spoke last and emphasized the importance of community-based philanthropy in the hospital’s plans for expansion. The evening concluded with a live auction.
In 2009 Mr. Goettelmann and his wife founded Monster’s Kids, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting CCMC. Mr. Goettelmann is an insurance specialist at Hartan Brokerage in Manhattan and attackman for the Long Island Lizards professional lacrosse team whose lacrosse moniker, “The Monster,” inspired the name of the group.
“The event was an even bigger success than I ever could have imagined,” said Mr. Goettelmann. “Lisa and I greatly look forward to the future of Monster’s Kids – and of the children’s hospital.”
“Kristen and I were blown away by the support of our community,” added Mr. Denihan, a real estate associate in the Connecticut office of Newmark Knight Frank. “Our friends and family can’t wait for the next event and to learn more about CCMC.”
About CCMC
For three consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report magazine has ranked the Steven and Alexandra Children’s Medical Center of New York (CCMC) as one of the best in the country. Opened in 1983 and known as Schneider Children’s Hospital until March 2010, the facility has nearly 600 pediatricians, including 120 full-time physicians, and a total workforce of 1,330, including about 400 nurses.
Annually, the children’s hospitals on the New Hyde Park and Manhasset campuses treat nearly 12,000 inpatients, about 170,000 outpatients, nearly 70,000 emergency patients and about 2,500 neonates, and perform about 6,500 surgeries. The New Hyde Park facility is one of only two pediatric trauma centers in the New York area. In addition to its main facilities in New Hyde Park and Manhasset, CCMC has satellite centers in Bensonhurst and Williamsburg, Brooklyn; Flushing, Queens; and Commack and Hewlett, Long Island.
