Ambulatory Surgery at Glen Cove
Overview
The Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU) of Glen Cove Hospital is part of the Department of Perioperative Services.
The ASU staff opens the doors at 6:00 a.m. and doesn't close them until the last patient is safely discharged. This is usually between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m., but can be much later.
Our multi-service ASU handles between 25 and 30 cases on an average day. Arthroscopies, biopsies, hernia repairs, shoulder surgery, cataract surgery, and tonsillectomies are just a few of the types of procedures done in this setting. A few years ago these same patients would have stayed over-night, a few days or more. As a result of new technologies, less invasive surgery, and improved anesthesia techniques and drugs, these procedures, as well as many others, now require only a few hours stay.
Family and friends are encouraged to stay with the patient in the ASU. Visitors as well as patients are usually quite surprised at how well the patient feels after surgery. Along with a safe and appropriate discharge, the goal is to make patients as comfortable and as pain free as possible. Anesthesiologists and nurses in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) play a vital role by starting pain control immediately.
In the event that a patient is not well enough to go home, there is an easy transition from outpatient to inpatient care. Patients continue to receive the highest standard of care after admission.
The expertise of the ASU staff as well as dedication to quality care and service provide an atmosphere consistent with our hospital's mission — to be the best health care provider possible.
