Glen Cove Hospital Cancer Program Awarded Top National Accreditation
Glen Cove, NY
Hospital’s Cancer Program Exceeds Standards from the Commission on Cancer
Glen Cove Hospital’s comprehensive cancer program recently received the specialty’s most prestigious honor -- a three-year accreditation with commendation by the national Commission on Cancer (CoC), part of the American College of Surgeons.
The rigorous accreditation process, which is voluntary, evaluates 36 different areas covering cancer services, including quality data, a tumor registry, prevention and early detection, and access to care. Glen Cove Hospital’s Cancer Committee submitted extensive documentation and participated in an onsite survey of the cancer program.
“The cancer program’s accreditation is very significant because a national organization has surveyed many different aspects of our program and Glen Cove has not only met stringent standards, but we have exceeded the guidelines,” said Rachel Robbins, MD, chair of the hospital’s Cancer Committee and assistant director of pathology and laboratory medicine at Glen Cove Hospital. “The top marks we received on the survey further demonstrate our dedication to providing up-to-date, high quality cancer care for residents of the north shore community.”
Glen Cove Hospital’s cancer program has a multidisciplinary team of specialists providing care in the fields of: medical oncology and radiation medicine at the Don Monti Cancer Center; state-of-the-art imaging; surgical oncology; pathology, nursing, dietary, rehabilitation, education and community outreach. Staff members work together closely to coordinate care.
Advanced technologies new to the cancer program include: breast biopsy guided in real-time by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); a positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), which is considered the gold standard in radiology for cancer staging; and a linear accelerator for radiation therapy.
“We’re very proud of the national recognition that our cancer program has received, which is due to our talented and committed team of cancer specialists,” said Dennis Connors, the hospital’s executive director. “A CoC-accredited cancer program ensures that patients have access to the full quality spectrum of comprehensive cancer care close to home.”
