The Division of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at Glen Cove Hospital offers a full range of services for the evaluation and management of patients with medical and surgical disorders of the ears, nose, throat and neck in children and adults. Our doctors and staff are dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality specialty care. We strive to provide modern medical facilities and technical excellence.
There are currently three otolaryngologists with full consulting and surgical privileges on staff at our hospital.
Bernard Tawfik, MD, is chief of the Division of Otolaryngology. He is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed a residency in otolaryngology - head and neck surgery at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. He has been in private practice since 1977. Dr. Tawfik has served as an attending surgeon in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is a past secretary, vice president and president of the Long Island Society of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. He is a past president of the medical staff of Glen Cove Hospital. Dr. Tawfik is board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, and has been listed in Castle and Connoly's "How to Find the Best Doctors in New York" since 1996. Dr. Tawfik is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the Long Island Society of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, and the New York Head and Neck Society
Idel I. Moisa, MD, is a graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed a residency in otolaryngology at the same institution. He also completed a one-year fellowship in head and neck surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Moisa joined our hospital in 1988. He holds several academic appointments, including assistant clinical professor of otolaryngology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as at the New York University School of Medicine. He has authored numerous scientific articles and book chapters and is the editor of "Otolaryngology Update," a professional newsletter for physicians. He conducts a regular Head and Neck Tumor Board at Glen Cove Hospital. Dr. Moisa is board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, and has been listed in Castle and Connoly's "How to Find the Best Doctors in New York" since 1996. Dr. Moisa is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the Long Island Society of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, and the New York Head and Neck Society.
Jay S. Rechtweg, MD, joined our hospital in 2005. He graduated from New York Medical College in 1995, and completed a residency in Otolaryngology at State University of New York at Buffalo in 2000. He also completed a one-year fellowship in rhinology at University of Chicago Medical Center in 2001. He is board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

Head and Neck Surgery

In addition, Dr. Tawfik and Dr. Moisa routinely perform the following operations:

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
The development of the endoscope allows our doctors to view the inside of the sinus cavities to diagnose and treat the primary source of chronic sinus disease. Endoscopic sinus surgery is less invasive than other forms of surgery and offers rapid relief of symptoms with a quick recovery. Our doctors use the most advanced equipment available in treating patients with disorders of the sinuses.
Dr. Bernard Tawfik was the first surgeon to bring this new technique to Glen Cove Hospital.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a potentially serious medical condition, characterized by snoring and daytime sleepiness. It mostly affects obese men over the age of 40. This condition is associated with a higher risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke. It is the most common cause of motor vehicle accidents among truck drivers. Evaluation of sleep apnea is performed through sleep studies. Our doctors can arrange for a quality sleep study to be performed.
Our surgeons work in conjunction with Pulmonologists and Sleep Medicine Specialists to offer patients with sleep apnea individual management options. The latest treatments for this condition are offered, including:
- Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)
- Laser-Assisted Uvulo Palatoplasty (LAUP)
- Tongue-based surgery
- Positive airway pressure
Laser Surgery for Snoring
Our surgeons offer a full range of laser procedures for benign and malignant lesions of the upper aerodigestive tract. The CO2 laser is utilizing the following conditions:
- Snoring
- Vocal cords / larynx lesions
- Oral cavity lesions
- Nasal cavity lesions
Dr. Moisa was the first Chairman of Laser Safety Committee at Glen Cove Hospital.
Facial Plastic Surgery
Our surgeons offers a range of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgical procedures. Some operations are performed in order to restore facial form following an accident, while others are designed to enhance an individual beauty.
