High-Risk Obstetrics, Ultrasound and Antepartum Testing
The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine offers comprehensive services to pregnant women with complex obstetrical and/or medical complications, which affect both mother and baby. Diabetics and patients with multiple gestations are included in this patient population. Both North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center have been designated Regional Perinatal Centers (RPCs) for high-risk obstetrical and neonatal management and receive patient referrals and consultations from the obstetrical staff at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, as well as from other affiliated hospitals on Long Island and in Queens. As RPCs, North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and Long Island Jewish Medical Center deliver the most comprehensive obstetric and neonatal care. Services are provided by perinatologists, specialists in maternal-fetal medicine and diagnostic obstetrical ultrasound, using the latest treatment methods for patients with complicated pregnancies. There is a High Risk In-Patient Unit at each hospital, specializing in antepartum care, for those patients in need of prenatal hospitalization.

There is also an outstanding Diabetes in Pregnancy Program that provides both outpatient and inpatient services. Diabetic education/support is available through the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine to provide education preconception through postpartum to type I, type II and gestational diabetic patients. They teach nutrition, diet, finger sticks, ketone testing, insulin and the importance of blood sugar control in pregnancy. A referral is required. These services are also available to hospitalized patients.
