Hospice and Palliative Care Elective at NSUH

The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System Palliative Medicine Program offers an opportunity for medical students to develop a knowledge base in palliative medicine. The curriculum includes:

  • The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Approach to End of Life Care
  • Alleviating Psychological and Spiritual Pain in the Terminally Ill
  • Assessment and Treatment of Pain in the Terminally Ill
  • Management of Selected Non-pain Symptoms in the Terminally Ill
  • Communication Skills
  • Ethical and Legal Decision Making When Caring for the Terminally Ill
  • The Hospice/Palliative Medicine Approach to Caring for Patients with HIV/AIDS, CHF, COPD, Dementia, Stroke, Coma and Multiple Organ Failure in the ICU
  • The Approach to Caring for Pediatric Patients with Life Limiting Illness
