Hyperbaric Chamber
At some locations, North Shore–LIJ Health System offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy, allowing patients to breathe 100% oxygen within a hyperbaric chamber at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. The chamber compresses oxygen bubbles so that even patients with poor circulation can absorb them more efficiently. This increased oxygen delivery aids in the body's ability to kill germs and increases healing, even in the most difficult-to-heal wounds.
Conditions that particularly benefit are:
- Necrotizing soft tissue infections
- Osteoradionecrosis
- Gangrene
- Chronic osteomyelitis
- Tissue damage associated with radiation therapy
- Diabetic/neuropathic foot ulcers
- Non-healing traumatic wounds
- Compromised skin grafts and skin
Hyperbaric chambers are located at Franklin Hospital, North Shore University Hospital/Long Island Jewish Medical Center Dept. of Surgery at 1999 Marcus Ave., Lake Success and Plainview Hospital.
