Institute for Nursing: A Culture of "Magnetism"
As of 2004, three of the 15 hospitals of the North Shore-LIJ Health System have received the Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing Service. The Magnet award is the profession’s top honor, given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. Magnet status is highly coveted and recognizes quality patient care and exemplary nursing leadership.
Facilities with Magnet designation have lower RN turnover and vacancy rates. This benefits hospitals in many ways, such as reduced overtime, lower costs for orientation and recruiting, and improved patient outcomes realized through the heightened focus on nursing care. Magnet status also brings with it a gold star reputation for the facility, which in turn helps hospitals to attract patients, and the most talented physicians and other staff.
Our goal is to create a culture of "Magnetism" throughout the health system. A culture of magnetism recognizes the importance of including nursing staffs in the decision-making process surrounding patient care and their work environment.
A culture of magnetism also emphasizes life-long learning, research, data analysis, process improvement and professional practice. With the establishment of this culture, the nurse at the bedside will continue to feel valued, involved, effective and edified. The institute will be a place to innovate and enhance patient care, serving both our communities and our valued nurses.
The Institute’s initiatives will result in:
- Measurable increases in patient and employee satisfaction
- Improved patient outcomes
- Enhanced patient safety
- Lower RN turnover and vacancy rates
- National and international recognition for nursing services
