Institute for Nursing: Building On Our Strengths
The North Shore-LIJ Health System recognizes the contributions of our more than 7,000 nurses. They are crucial to the success of the organization. Nurses play an integral role in patient outcomes, and feel a strong sense of accountability and responsibility to take decisive actions to preserve the integrity of patient care they deliver at the bedside.
The collective teamwork of nurses and their commitment to excellence have helped the North Shore-LIJ Health System to achieve many accomplishments in recent years:

LIJ Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital were the first two hospitals in New York State to receive the prestigious Magnet Award, and Huntington Hospital was the first hospital in Suffolk County to receive the award.

North Shore-LIJ is the only health system in New York State and one of 13 nationwide selected to participate in Transforming Care at the Bedside, an initiative aimed at increasing the amount of time nurses spend at the bedside with patients and reducing the time they spend on paperwork. It is a joint program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Healthcare Improvement.

The Center for Tobacco Control of North Shore University Hospital received a five year, $2.6 million New York State grant to help identify hospital patients who smoke and give them the resources to quit. The program is being rolled out to 43 hospitals on Long Island.

LIJ Medical Center, in partnership with Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, received a $500,000, three-year grant to provide geriatric patients with better family-centered care. The grant was awarded by the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration.

North Shore University Hospital was rated the top hospital in America in a national study published in AARP’s Modern Maturity magazine.

Syosset Hospital was the first hospital in New York State to be recognized by J.D. Power and Associates for service excellence. They received the award the following year for the second time.

The North Shore-LIJ Health System was the first health system in the nation to receive the Codman Award from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Franklin Hospital was the only facility in New York State to receive a Compass Award for outstanding performance improvement from Press Ganey Associates, Inc.

North Shore University Hospital was one of four Magnet hospitals to receive the Journey to Excellence award from the American International Health Alliance for helping hospitals in Eastern Europe improve patient care and increase opportunities for nurses in professional development.
