Institute for Nursing: Championing Nursing Education and Workforce Development
The Institute for Nursing will be a concrete link between nursing education and nursing practice. There will be an intense focus on learning and workforce development, formulating programs for nurse managers at all levels and identifying high-potential RNs who can grow into leadership positions.
The goal is to ensure efficient utilization of resources by establishing a basic system-wide standard of quality in care delivery. There will be partnerships with colleges for on-site educational programs.
The Institute for Nursing is committed to helping nurses and employees who aspire to become nurses with the educational support they need. The North Shore-LIJ Health System has excellent relationships with several schools of nursing and we have joined with these institutions to offer nursing and advanced nursing degree programs. These include BS and MS degrees and an Associate's degree in Nursing. Since 2001, the health system has offered an innovative tuition-free, on-site program for nonprofessional staff to become nurses at the entry level.
Whenever possible, courses are offered on hospital campuses to accommodate staff shifts. Through distance learning and online courses, nursing degree programs also are offered to accommodate employees who cannot attend traditional classes.
We will also expand continuing education courses and develop a speakers’ bureau. Nurses will get support and structure to:
-
develop their ideas to improve care practices into focused research;
-
share good outcomes system-wide; and
-
articulate their stories, through writing and speaking.
