Institute for Nursing: Supporting Nursing Research

Nursing as a profession is evolving in its knowledge base from tradition and other sources of knowledge to a more scientific basis that is promoting better health and providing care to individuals across the lifespan.

The Institute for Nursing  will accelerate this evolution through nursing research, research utilization, evidence-based practice and dissemination of gathered knowledge. The goal is to establish nursing research and evidence-based practice as a professional value, standard and behavior for nurses in administration, education and clinical practice within the North Shore-LIJ Health System.

The vision is for the health system to emerge as a national leader in nursing research and evidence-based practice. The Institute for Nursing  is well positioned to pursue this vision due to the size, scope and complexity of the health system, which provides the perfect research lab to test innovative care delivery models and generate new standards in nursing practice.

The Institute for Nursing  will accomplish its vision of attaining national significance by preparing its nurses through education and providing opportunities to conduct research, extract best practice and articulate their expertise through publications and presentations within and outside the health system.

To further foster the attainment of national identity, The Institute for Nursing  will participate in the research themes of the National Institute of Nursing Research and enter into partnerships with other health systems and institutions of learning. The Institute for Nursing  will seek grants and other funding to accomplish and maximize the achievement of its goals.
