Ira Udell, MD

Chairman of Ophthalmology

North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and LIJ Medical Center

Dr. Udell is responsible for directing all Ophthalmology Department activities. A board certified ophthalmologist, he served most recently as vice chairman of NSUH and LIJ's Ophthalmology Department. Dr. Udell joined LIJ Medical Center's Ophthalmology Department in 1981 as chief of the division of corneal and external diseases. He was named the department's acting chairman in 1993 and appointed permanent chairman in 1997, a position he held through 2004 when the ophthalmology departments at North Shore and LIJ were combined.

Before joining LIJ, Dr. Udell was a cornea fellow at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. He has been professor of ophthalmology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine since 1996.

Dr. Udell has held various positions in regional, state, and national ophthalmologic organizations. He has received the Honor Award and Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, an organization on which he serves as a New York State counselor. He is also director-at-large of the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmology and an executive board member of the New York State Ophthalmology Society. Dr. Udell has authored or co-authored 60 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. His research interests are corneal transplantation, DSAEK, ocular infections, and ocular surface disorders.

Dr. Udell earned his medical degree from Tulane University Medical School, New Orleans, LA, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
