James M. Crawford MD, PhD
Senior Vice President for Laboratory Services, North Shore-LIJ Health System and
Chairman of Pathology/Laboratory Medicine, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and LIJ Medical Center
Dr. Crawford directs and coordinates all components of the pathology and laboratory medicine departments, and provides strategic leadership of the laboratory service line across the health system. Dr. Crawford comes to North Shore-LIJ from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, FL, where he was professor and chair of the department of pathology, immunology and laboratory medicine. A diplomate of the American Board of Pathology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, he also served as associate medical examiner for District 8 in Florida. Prior to this, he was associate professor of pathology and director of the program in gastrointestinal pathology at the Yale University School of Medicine, and staff pathologist at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT.
Dr. Crawford is a member of and has served in various leadership capacities in professional societies, including the Association of Pathology Chairs, Association of American Medical Colleges, College of American Pathologists, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society.
Dr. Crawford received his medical degree and doctorate from Duke University in Durham, NC. He completed his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. His postgraduate training also includes completing a fellowship in hepatic and gastrointestinal pathology, and serving as a research fellow in pathology and gastroenterology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In addition, he was a Burroughs-Wellcome research scholar in hepatic pathology at Royal Free Hospital in London, England.
