LIJ Appoints New Associate Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center today announced the appointment of S. Jacob Scheinerman, MD, as associate chairman of cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Scheinerman has been a cardiac surgeon for more than 18 years and specializes in minimally invasive surgery. He has expertise in all aspects of cardiac surgery, including minimally invasive treatment of atrial septal defects - a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart.
Before joining LIJ, Dr. Scheinerman practiced in Hartford, CT, at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, which is home to one of New England's most active and prestigious private cardiothoracic surgical practices. He held an academic appointment of assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of Connecticut Medical Center. He was also a consultant to thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the Rehab Hospital of Connecticut.
"Not only was he one of the busiest surgeons in Connecticut, Dr. Scheinerman had one of the state's lowest mortality and morbidity rates, despite taking on many high-risk, complex surgical cases frequently deferred by other institutions," said Alan Hartman, MD, chairman of cardiothoracic surgery at LIJ Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY.
While in Hartford, Dr. Scheinerman devoted a great deal of time to providing charity medical care to Russian immigrants. In recognition of those efforts, he was honored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford for his generosity and dedication to providing health care to new members of the community. He was also president of the Central Connecticut affiliate of the American Heart Association, and chaired its annual fundraising dinner from 2000 to 2005.
Dr. Scheinerman is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. A graduate of New York University (NYU) School of Medicine, he received his residency training at NYU Hospital, Bellevue Hospital Center and the Manhattan VA Medical Center. He also completed his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at NYU Hospital, Bellevue Hospital Center, and the Manhattan VA Medical Center. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from NYU's undergraduate program.
