Electroconvulsive Therapy at LIJ

The attending anesthesiologist providing anesthesia for patients undergoing ECT performs a pre-operative assessment of each patient beginning a series of treatment, and prior to each treatment. He/she discusses with the treating psychiatrist any modification of usual procedures that may be indicated by the pre-op assessment. The anesthesiologist provides appropriate monitoring during the procedure and informs the psychiatrist and nurses of any events during ECT requiring additional interventions by the anesthesiologist. The anesthesiologist remains present in the unit and approves, in writing, the discharge of each patient following their recovery from anesthesia. Those patients considered to be a high risk may receive ECT in the Post -Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) at LIJ Hospital.
