Chemistry Laboratory

The Chemistry Laboratory at LIJMC is under the direction of Cynthia Bowman, MD. She oversees the daily operations and subsequent processing of 1.5M procedures/year. Dr. Bowman also oversees the Immunology Laboratory at LIJMC that processes in excess of 44,000 tests/yr including an extensive hepatitis testing menu.

As a result of the relationship within the health system among all of the laboratories, LIJMC coordinates its efforts to ensure standardization of policies/procedures, equipment, reagents, quality indicators and quality improvement activities designed to ensure a seamless testing practices/environment for the clinicians and other providers who utilize the laboratories services.

In addition to the oversite of the Chemistry Laboratory, Dr. Bowman participates in the residency program at both North Shore University Hospital, LIJMC and the Core Lab; both didactic and rotational, within the individual departments. She also chairs the Chemistry Methods committee. This committee is dedicated to ensuring best practices are employed throughout the system through standardization and consolidation where feasible and acceptable for the individual facility.

Hematology Laboratory

The Hematology Laboratory at LIJMC is under the direction of Peihong Hsu, MD, FCAP. Dr. Hsu oversees the daily clinical operations for all routine/special hematology and coagulation testing. This laboratory processes in excess of 534,408 samples per year. In addition, she is actively engaged in Bone Marrow biopsies and Flow Cytometric analysis to support this important clinical service.

Cytogenetics Laboratory

The Cytogenetics Laboratory at LIJMC is under the direction of Ann Leslie Zaslav, PhD. This laboratory performs Molecular Oncology, Molecular Genetics and Aminocentesis aqnalysis/karyotyping. In addition, this laboratory has recently introduced Flourescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH) testing to support the cancer services, both adult and pediatric. Routinely, Cytogenetics performs in excess of 9,000 billable tests per year and they are constantly seeking to stay current within this rapidly changing technical area.

Microbiology Laboratory

The Microbiology Laboratory at LIJMC is under the direction of Ernest Vellozi, PhD. Performing in excess of 138K cultures/year, this service supports LIJMC, Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York and Zucker Hillside Medical Center.

Transfusion Medicine:

LIJMC provides an extensive Transfusion Medicine in support of the clinical programs of the facility. Services provided include extensive Transfusion Medicine, therapeutic apheresis, and support for the bone marrow transplant program. This services is directed by James Louie, MD, FCAP and processes approximately 220,000 tests per year; dispensing another 32,000 blood products per year.
