The Department of Laboratories is under the direction of Cynthia Bowman, MD for the Laboratory Medicine services and Leonard Kahn, MD for Surgical Pathology.

The Department operates through a tiered structure, consisting of the clinical labs at LIJMC, the centralized North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System Core Laboratory, which is located in Lake Success, in addition to separate surgical pathology laboratories at each hospital site.

Within this structure, there are two vice chairs who oversee the daily operations of the respective services; Cynthia Bowman, MD, FCAP, Lab Medicine, and Tawfiqul Bhuiya, MD, FCAP, Surgical Pathology. Under this structure resides the administrative arm of the service and respective clinical departments.

LIJMC represents is a member of the NS-LIJ Health System, the health system is a part of one of the largest Integrated Health Networks (IHN) in the country. The reference testing for LIJMC is forwarded over to the Core Laboratories. The Core Lab supports the routine samples processing operations for seven community hospitals and one tertiary center.
