Inpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy

The division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is available to provide physical therapy and occupational therapy services to the patients of Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Each patient’s physician will determine if a consultation is needed. An evaluation by our department may be required:

  • To help determine a discharge placement recommendation.
  • To assess equipment needs upon discharge.
  • For patients that are functioning at a level lower than their norm.
  • For patients requiring training with assistive devices.
  • For patients needing splinting.

Once a referral is received, most patients are seen within 24 hours. The members of our team work closely with social workers, case managers, nurses and physicians to ensure that each patient has the appropriate treatment and discharge plan in place.

Physical Therapy

A physical therapist is a licensed professional who specializes in restoring lost function or strength due to injury or disease and will help prevent complications resulting from disability or pain. Each patient will receive an evaluation and a specific treatment plan tailored to meet their needs.

Occupational Therapy

An occupational therapist is a licensed professional who specializes in restoring an individual’s ability to perform activities of daily living (e.g., dressing) that were lost due to disease or injury. If needed, an occupational therapist can also make upper extremity braces or splints for positioning and support.

Hours

The department provides services daily from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
