Requirements
We look for commitment, flexibility, and motivation in our volunteers. Working as part of a team often means that volunteers will be asked to help in areas other than those assigned—that is when our volunteers “shine”.
Commitment: 100 hours a year
Short-term assignments (6-8weeks) are scheduled for H.S. and College students only during the summer months.
The minimum age to volunteer in LIJMC is fourteen; in the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York applicants must be at least a Junior in High School, in Zucker Hillside Hospital applicants must be at least seventeen years of age.
All applicants must attend a mandatory orientation to the North Shore-LIJ Health System, the hospitals and the Volunteer Dept. The applicant will then be interviewed and if accepted into the program, must receive medical clearance before starting any assignment. Applicants eighteen and older must submit to a background check.
Junior volunteers (14-17) must also submit working papers and a letter of recommendation from a Guidance Counselor.
Juniors are usually assigned to clerical service.
There may be a waiting list for assignments working with children.
There is a three-month probationary period to ensure that volunteers and assignments are meeting the needs of the hospitals.
Applications may be requested by contacting the Volunteer Office.
