June 17, 2009

NEW HYDE PARK, NY – Kerri Scanlon, RN, chief nursing officer and associate executive director of LIJ Medical Center, won the top regional Nurse Excellence award presented by Nursing Spectrum magazine in the category of “advancing and leading the profession.”

Ms. Scanlon recently joined her colleagues and more than 300 nurses from the tri-state area at the Glenpointe Marriott in Teaneck, NJ to honor and recognize the wide-ranging contributions of nurses in various specialties at the prestigious annual Nurse Excellence Awards program.

“Kerri’s passion for patient care and for the important role of nursing in healthcare are evident in the goals she sets for herself and her team,” said Maureen White, RN, chief nurse executive of the 14-hospital North Shore-LIJ Health System.  “It is this passion that contributed greatly to her receiving this wonderful honor.”

Ms. Scanlon’s nursing and administrative responsibilities include oversight for all of the hospital’s nursing services, including perioperative and emergency services, strategic planning for nursing and clinical services, and fiscal responsibility for the largest cost center hospital-wide.  She has an active role in the health system’s Nurse Executive Council and has established best practice standards for nursing.

“We are extremely proud that Kerri has been recognized by her peers for leadership in the nursing profession,” said John Steel, LIJ’s executive director.  ‘Kerri has an enormous ability to motivate and lead others to achieve their own personal best as well as deliver the highest quality care to patients.  Through her efforts at LIJ and in the healthcare arena, she raises the bar for her peers and continually promotes excellence in the nursing profession.”

Ms. Scanlon began her career at North Shore-LIJ in 1994 as a cardiothoracic intensive care nurse at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, and later became a critical care nurse educator there.  She also served as the health system’s assistant director of quality management, director of quality and case management, and assistant vice president of quality management and regulatory affairs. Ms. Scanlon joined LIJ as chief nursing officer in 2005.

Ms. Scanlon received a BA from Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY, and both a BS and MS in nursing from Columbia University. She is a member of the American Organization of Nursing Executives.
