Montauk, New York—For 52 energetic and goal-oriented individuals, the concept of pushing oneself to the limit took on new meaning this past Saturday, June 13th.That’s when the members of grassroots fundraising group Tri-ing for Kids!!™ swam, biked and ran their way through the 27th annual Mighty Montauk Triathlon, in the process raising more than $30,000 for Schneider Children’s Hospital (SCH), a member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. This is the second year in a row that Tri-ing for Kids!!™ has participated in the triathlon for the benefit of SCH.

“I was inspired to start this group while sitting in Central Park after completing the New York City Triathlon a few years back,” says group founder and triathlon participant Doug Rabin, who resides in Brightwaters. “I watched the determination and dedication of so many fellow triathletes as they headed toward the finish line for various charitable causes, and I came up with the idea of finding a charity I could get behind and forming my own triathlon team.”

Rabin eventually selected SCH as the beneficiary of his generosity and, last year, Tri-ing for Kids!!™ was born. Rabin enthusiastically recruited members and provided all of the necessary training and educational resources, and the group participated in the Mighty Montauk Triathlon for the first time in 2008.

“We did everything possible to solicit donations this year, including bake sales, selling concessions at Long Island Ducks games, and utilizing email and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter,” says Rabin. “As a result, our contributors ranged from Runner’s Edge, to CEOs of hedge funds, to high school students, to six-year-olds who set up a lemonade stand.”

Tri-ing for Kids!!™ has already begun preparing for next year’s Mighty Montauk Triathlon, and Rabin hopes to expand the scope of his group to fundraise for the hospital year-round. To make a donation to the group, visit http://support.northshorelij.com/tri.
