Lawrence Smith, MD, Named Chief Medical Officer at North Shore-LIJ

North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System President and CEO Michael J. Dowling today announced the appointment of Lawrence Smith, MD, as chief medical officer (CMO), effective on Sept. 1. As the CMO, Dr. Smith will be the 15-hospital health system's senior physician, responsible for the overall professional management of clinical, education, research and operational issues related to all medical and clinical affairs throughout North Shore-LIJ.

Over the past 18 months, Dr. Smith has served as the North Shore-LIJ Health System's senior vice president of academic affairs and chief academic officer. "The close relationships that Dr. Smith has developed with doctors and hospitals across the North Shore-LIJ Health System have helped strengthen our partnerships with staff and community-based physicians, as well as enhance our graduate medical education programs and physician recruitment efforts," said Mr. Dowling.

Dr. Smith succeeds Jon Cohen, MD.Before joining North Shore-LIJ, Dr. Smith was at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan, where he served as dean and chairman of medical education, director of the school's Institute for Medical Education, professor of medicine and an attending physician. He earned his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine, along with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Fordham University. He participated in the Harvard Macy Institute's Program for Leaders in Medical Education. He is on the executive committee of the Organization of Program Directors Association, a Regent of the American College of Physicians, a former president of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine, and is affiliated with numerous professional and scientific societies.
