Letter from our Chairman
The Department of Ophthalmology of the North Shore–LIJ Health System is located in a state-of-the-art outpatient facility on Northern Boulevard in Great Neck. The Departments of Ophthalmology at North Shore University at Manhasset and Long Island Jewish Medical Center were officially merged on January 1, 2005. This represents the merger of two Departments that have provided eye care for over 50 years.
The Department of Ophthalmology has board certified faculty (by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a founding Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties), and over one hundred voluntary faculty. We offer comprehensive eye care that includes general ophthalmology for adults sand children. As well as subspecialty ophthalmic care provided by both full time and voluntary faculty which includes Cornea & External Disease, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Refractive Surgery (LASIK), Glaucoma, Retina, Uveitis, Oculoplastics, and Low Vision Services. The academic affiliations are with Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the NYU School of Medicine.
The growth of the Department mirrors that of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System that is now the third largest non-profit secular health care system in the U.S. and the largest healthcare network in New York State. Its recent achievements include the first Codman Award to a health care system by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. North Shore University Hospital at Syosset was awarded the J. D. Powers Award for excellence in patient service. The Ophthalmology program is active at 2 of its tertiary facilities North Shore University at Manhasset and Long Island Jewish Medical Center and at the Eye Surgery Center at North Shore University Hospital at Syosset.
Our commitment to the community is exemplified by the service provided by the Lion's Eye Bank for Long Island at North Shore University Hospital at Manhasset. The Eye Bank allows us not only the opportunity to serve, but also that ability to provide for research and educational opportunities.
All of these services are offered with the technical expertise that is expected and the compassion and patient-emphasis that are requisite for a complete ethical and Professional delivery of eye care.
Sincerely,
Ira Udell, MD
