When it comes to healthcare, we hear a lot about quality. Many hospitals claim to be dedicated to quality outcomes or quality care — familiar buzzwords that are frequently used within the healthcare industry but can often be difficult for consumers and patients to put their arms around.
What does quality actually mean? How is it quantified and improved upon so it transforms care at the bedside?
To be sure, quality is more than a feel-good mantra hospitals cite in mission statements. Here at the North Shore-LIJ Health System, we’ve been championing the tangible results gleaned from quality measurement and reporting since our inception over a decade ago.
We recognize that our goal of becoming a national healthcare leader depends not only on demonstrated excellence through adherence to best practices, but also on a culture of transparency that enables consumers to measure the health system’s performance against standardized measures in crucial areas of care.
Our ability to quantify healthcare outcomes, realize cost efficiencies, provide proper utilization management review and ensure patient safety are among the many steps we’ve taken to ensure we’re delivering on our promise of providing high-quality care to the communities we serve.
