Local Fundraising Group Runs Triathlon, Raises More Than $100,000 for Children’s Hospital
Montauk, New York—More than 100 energetic individuals learned just how good it feels to accomplish their goals on Saturday, June 12. That’s when the members of grassroots fundraising group Tri-ing for Kids!!™ swam, biked and ran their way through the 28th annual Mighty Montauk Triathlon, in the process raising more than $100,000 for the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York (CCMC), a member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. This is the third year in a row that Tri-ing for Kids!!™ has participated in the triathlon for the benefit of CCMC (formerly Schneider Children’s Hospital).
“I was inspired to start this group while sitting in Central Park after completing the New York City Triathlon a few years back,” said group founder and triathlon participant Doug Rabin, who resides in Brightwaters. “I watched the determination and dedication of so many fellow triathletes as they headed toward the finish line for various charitable causes, and I came up with the idea of finding a charity I could get behind and forming my own triathlon team.”
Rabin eventually selected CCMC as the beneficiary of his generosity and, two years ago, Tri-ing for Kids!!™ was born. Rabin enthusiastically recruited members and provided all of the necessary training and educational resources, and the group participated in the Mighty Montauk Triathlon for the first time in 2008. Team members were so inspired by the experience that they began inviting friends and family to join, eventually doubling the size of the team to more than 100 – and more than tripling the money raised.
“I created Tri-ing for Kids!!™ to help people set a personal goal of completing an endurance event while doing it for a cause bigger than themselves,” said Rabin. “While we have a suggested donation amount, most of our team members took it upon themselves to share their stories and raise much, much more.”

About CCMC
For four consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report magazine has ranked the Steven and Alexandra Children’s Medical Center of New York (CCMC) – part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System – as one of the best in the country. Opened in 1983 and known as Schneider Children’s Hospital until March 2010, the New Hyde Park facility is one of only two pediatric trauma centers in the New York area. Construction is now underway on a 100,000-square-foot pavilion to be built in front of the existing hospital. When completed in 2013, the pavilion will include the region’s first dedicated, stand-alone pediatric emergency department; a 24-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit; a 25-bed Medical-Surgical Unit; and a state-of-the-art surgery center with six operating rooms solely for children.
