Long Acting Beta Agonist Step Down Study

Protocol ID

11-375B

Protocol Description

The purpose of this research study is to test the best approach to decreasing asthma medications for patients whose asthma is well controlled by medications that include an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) and a long-acting beta agonist (LABA). Guidelines for asthma care recommend decreasing these medications for patients whose asthma is well controlled, but there is no agreement on the best way to decrease the medication(s).

This study will test two ways of decreasing treatment:
(1) reducing the dose of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) while keeping the long-acting beta agonist (LABA) dose the same, or
(2) stopping the long-acting beta agonist while keeping the inhaled corticosteroid dose the same.
All of the drugs that will be tested in this study are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of asthma.

Eligibility Criteria

Males and females 12 years of age and older, with physician diagnosed asthma that is well controlled on one of the combination medications of ICS and LABA
