North Shore-LIJ Health System, a 14-hospital system in New York, has launched an online tool to help patients determine the cost of medical services in advance and find out whether they are eligible for financial assistance, according to a system news release.

The online tool, accessible from the system's home page, is an attempt to help increase the transparency of healthcare pricing, according to Michael Dowling, the system's president and CEO.

The website is intended to help patients understand their hospital bills, estimate their out-of-pocket costs, establish interest-free payment plans and make payments online.
