Medical Update TV - Current Schedule

Below is this month's program schedule for the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s award-winning television series 'Medical Update'. The program, hosted by former WPIX-Channel 11 medical reporter Dr. Mike Rosen and produced by Elaine Wohl of North Shore-LIJ Public Relations, airs at 11 a.m. on Saturdays on WLNY-TV on Channel 10 on Cablevision, Channel 55 on Time-Warner Cable and on Tuesday and Thursday at 11 am on Channel 1 on Verizon FiOS TV.  The program is also available to satellite TV subscribers on DirecTV and Dish TV.


SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 2012 at 11am

PART 1- MINIMALLY INVASIVE BENIGN GYNECOLOGIC SURGERY
Helen Greco, MD, Chief, Benign Gynecology, LIJ Medical Center and Michael Nimaroff, MD, Vice Chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology. North Shore University Hospital, discuss the advantages of using the da Vinci Surgical System in minimally invasive benign gynecologic surgery : Topics include: examining and comparing open and laparoscopic surgery, hysterectomy, ovarian cystectomy, myomectomy, fibroids, faster recovery time, less scarring, achieving surgical team proficiency in the new system, and other surgical advances.
 

PART 2- ALZHEIMER’S UPDATE
Tina Walch, MD, Dir., Adult Outpatient/Perinatal Psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital discusses the moderate to sometimes severe depression which may occur after a woman has given birth. Topics include: the “baby blues” and how it differs from mood swings, role of the father and relatives, the different stages of post-partum depression, appropriate antidepressant medication, and what can happen if the condition is left untreated.


SATURDAY, JANUARY 21 at 11 am

PART 1 - MINIMALLY INVASIVE GYNECOLOGIC CANCER SURGERY
Diana Contreras, MD, Director, Gynecologic Oncology, LIJ Medical Center and Jill Whyte, MD, Surgeon, Gynecologic Oncology, North Shore University Hospital, discuss using the least invasive surgical approach in female gynecologic oncology surgery, the robot-assisted, minimally invasive da Vinci System. Topics include: when surgery is indicated in the treatment of cancer and pre-cancerous conditions of the female reproductive system, types of procedures performed, who is a candidate for robot-assisted surgery, beginning chemotherapy after surgery, training needed to use the da Vinci system, the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, and surgical team advances through using da Vinci system.

PART 2- DIAMOND BLACKFAN ANEMIA
Jeffrey Lipton, MD., PhD, Chief, Pediatric Hematology, Oncology & Cell Transplantation, Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center of New York, discusses the very rare blood disorder which is usually diagnosed by age one or two. Topics include: how the diagnosis is made, signs and symptoms, birth defects, failure of the bone marrow, genetics and the importance of family history of disease in DBA cases, treatment options, successful remission, and stem cell/bone narrow transplantation.

PART 1 - CHILDHOOD IMMUNIZATIONS
Lorry Rubin, MD, Chief, Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York and Sunil Sood, MD, Chairman, Dept. of Pediatrics at Southside Hospital, offer parents valuable information on childhood vaccinations and discuss lingering misinformation, myths and parental fears when making vital decisions about their children's health care.

PART 2- GENETIC COUNSELING
Joyce Fox, MD, Chief, Human Genetics at Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York and Kimberly Kessler, MS, Genetic Counselor, Cohen Children’s Medical Center, discuss genetics, which plays an enormous role in our medical care, and genetic testing which can uncover potential medical problems and detect possible birth defects even before a baby is born.
