Memory Disorders Program
Memory disorders and related dementia like Alzheimer’s Disease affect an increasing proportion of the growing aging population in our region. Early evaluation is important since reversible or partly reversible medical, neurological and psychiatric conditions may present with memory problems and be mistakenly ascribed to a neurodegenerative condition like Alzheimer's Disease.
Several types of physicians and programs in the NS-LIJHS assess and treat memory disorders. These include geriatricians (internists with specialized geriatric medicine training), neurologists, and geriatric psychiatrists who often work closely together to coordinate optimal care. Any of the specialists described below can evaluate initial memory complaints, but here is a guide to help select services that best align with your needs:
If your loved one is suffering from memory or related intellectual problems along with:
- Complex medical illness that create additional challenges for patients and caregivers — Find a Geriatrican
- Psychiatric concerns such as severe agitation, delusions or major depression — Find a Geriatric Psychiatrist
- Neurological concerns, such as involuntary movements, headache, seizures or stroke — Find a Neurologist

Alzheimer's Disease Research
In collaboration with our Feinstein Institute for Biomedical Research, and through the generosity of System trustees Donald and Barbara Zucker and Leonard Litwin, the NS-LIJ Health System has also established the Litwin-Zucker Research Center for the Study of Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders under the leadership of Peter Davies, PhD, a world-renowned Alzheimer's disease researcher. The Center is a Long Island hub for basic and clinical research in Alzheimer's disease and related memory disorders. For many patients and family members, participation in research is a critical therapeutic activity that allows them to contribute to the advancing understanding and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
