August 24, 2010

GREAT NECK, NY – North Shore-LIJ Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Dowling ranked 51st in Modern Healthcare magazine’s annual listing of the nation’s “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare,” published this week. Mr. Dowling was the top-ranked hospital executive in the New York area and moved up 10 slots from his 61st ranking last year.

Topping Modern Healthcare’s “most powerful” list were: President Obama; Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary, Health and Human Services (HHS); Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives; US Senator Max Baucus, D-Montana, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee; and Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO, Catholic Health Organization.

Mr. Dowling has been North Shore-LIJ’s president and CEO since January 2002, after having served as the health system’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. Before joining North Shore-LIJ in 1995, he served in New York State government for 12 years, including seven years as State Director of Health, Education and Human Services and Deputy Secretary to the Governor. He was also commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services.

North Shore-LIJ is the nation’s second-largest, non-profit, secular healthcare system. It includes 15 hospitals throughout Long Island, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan (Lenox Hill Hospital joined North Shore-LIJ this spring), 17 long-term care facilities, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, five home health agencies, three trauma centers, the Hospice Care Networks and dozens of outpatient centers across the region. In addition, the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine will admit its first class of 40 students in August 2011.

Excluding its affiliate organizations, North Shore-LIJ facilities house more than 5,600 hospital and long-term care beds, have more than 9,000 physicians, and employ more than 10,000 nurses and a total workforce of about 42,000 employees—making it the largest employer on Long Island and the ninth-largest in New York City.
