Mood Disorders
These disorders, sometimes called affective disorders, have a disturbance in mood as the predominant feature and include all types of depression and bipolar disorders. Mood disorders can be present in children, adolescents and adults.
Anyone can feel sad or depressed at times. However, mood disorders are more intense and difficult to manage than normal feelings of sadness. For instance, bipolar disorder, which is also know as manic depression, is a type of mood disorder that goes beyond the day's ordinary ups and downs. The disorder involves episode of extreme elation, elevated mood or irritability as well as classic symptoms of depression (sad mood, excessive crying, changes in sleep and appetite, decreased energy, etc.).
