ER: Seconds Count
North Shore-LIJ's Center for Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) is the first on Long Island and Queens to provide a wireless tracking system to better predict ambulance arrivals at emergency rooms and gather critical health data on patients before they arrive at the hospital. The new technology is in place at LIJ Medical Center and will be rolled out to other health system hospitals in the near future. Responding to 911 calls, paramedics and EMTs assess patients at the emergency site and en route in ambulances, transmitting information via laptop computers. Key patient information is displayed on a 40-inch monitor in the ER. The tracking system jump starts patient care and allows doctors and nurses to triage patients before they come through the door, providing seamless care.
