National Fertility Group Presents Nursing Excellence Award to Egg Coordinator at North Shore University Hospital’s Center for Human Reproduction
MANHASSET, NY -- Barbara Skidmore, RN, of North Shore University Hospital’s Center for Human Reproduction, recently received the 2009 Resolve Joanne J. Amato Excellence in Nursing Award. Resolve, the National Infertility Association, honored Ms. Skidmore’s outstanding clinical skill, compassion and dedication to patient care.
In her role as donor egg coordinator, Ms. Skidmore, a resident of Franklin Square, counsels and helps patients at every step through their family-building journey. Ms. Skidmore’s nomination for the Resolve award was bolstered by personalized letters from patients touched by her care. A founding member of the Long Island Reproductive Nurses Association, she accepted the honor at the association’s 2009 Hope Awards event at the Tavern on the Green in Manhattan.
Established in 1974, Resolve is a nonprofit organization with the only established, nationwide network mandated to promote reproductive health and to ensure equal access to all family-building options for men and women experiencing infertility or other reproductive disorders. Its mission is to provide timely, compassionate support and information to people who are experiencing infertility and to increase awareness of infertility issues through public education and advocacy.
The family of Ms. Amato established the Excellence in Nursing Award in 2006 to celebrate her memory. A longtime nurse, Ms. Amato dedicated herself to reproductive medicine. She capped her exemplary career by receiving the Star of Resolve Award. Upon her untimely demise, the Amato family was inspired to recognize and encourage nurses who are similarly committed.
Anthony Amato, husband of Ms. Amato, was honored to recognize Ms. Skidmore’s enthusiasm. “Ms. Skidmore is so dedicated to helping patients realize a dream,” he said. “She is a role model for all nurses.”
