Neuroendodrine tumor research sponsored by grants

August 17, 2010
An increased understanding of neuroendocrine tumor biology, and identifying targeted treatments for carcinoid and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, is the goal of a new partnership in cancer research funding.

The American Association for Cancer Research has joined the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF) and the Sackler Fund for the Arts and Sciences to provide two $250,000 research grants over a two-year period from CFCF and two $100,000 grants over two years from the Sackler fund. The application deadline for both grant programs is September 15, 2010.

"We share the vision of these two incredible organizations to move the science forward to combat carcinoid tumors," said Dr. Margaret Foti, CEO of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Carcinoid tumors are tumors of the gastrointestinal tract that can occur anywhere from the stomach to the rectum. Endocrine tumors of the pancreas are rare tumors that include insulinomas, gastrinomas, VIPomas and non-functioning pancreatic endocrine tumors. Tumors that are small in size and usually benign, such as insulinomas, can frequently be removed by laparoscopic surgery.

The Cancer Institute of the North Shore-LIJ Health System uses a multidisciplinary approach to individualized cancer treatment that includes a team of medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, surgical subspecialists, pathologists, nurses, social workers, nutritionists and genetic counselors.ADNFCR-2730-ID-19927101-ADNFCR
